This is a replica of the Nomai translator tool from the game `Outer Wilds`. It's assembled from a mix of built-in threaded sections, friction fit slots, pegs, and glue. It's a big project and I'm not yet willing to provide in-depth documentation, so beware.

Things you'll need outside of what is printable include:

  • 3 toggle switches
  • 1 potentiometer
  • an Arduino (or compatible micro-controller. I used an esp32 board).
  • A small stepper motor and driver (for the spinning reel).
  • A printed piece of cardstock for the screen (file to print is provided Via PDF. I laminated mine for a more genuine effect).
  • A length of ethernet cable for the cable exiting the camera.
  • 2 M5 screws for attaching the camera module.
  • Various small screws for decoration.
  • Various electronics include LED tape for the screen backlight, 5mm LEDs for the camera, various resistors, and wire.

I chose to design mine to work with 9v which drives my 12v LED tape well and can be run for about an hour on a 9v battery (The stepper motor is power-hungry). You can run yours however you like.

That's about it! Have fun.
